Bubba's First Real Book

As I am sure many of you know, my first real books were Robert A. Heinlein's science fiction. Rocket Ship Galileo, Red Planet, The Rolling Stones. Admittedly, I didn't understand everything I read, but they were enjoyable enough that I understood more and more with each re-read.

This is Creighton's first real book. No pictures, no rhymes, no (necessarily) happy endings. Hopefully, he'll be as enamored with sci-fi as I am. Of course, with my luck, he'll end up hooked on self-help and "Dummies" books.

Unreal, Chuck...

Rocket Ship Galileo...1967...I was 8 at the time and tore through it like there was a prize waiting on the last page. I know the territory he's going through very well, and even with the tons of new stuff written since then, the old classics are still a great place to start.

When he gets to Asimov and Dick, start him off easy (Fantastic Voyage, The Dragon in the Sea), and when he wants to know where the term "Cyborg" came from, show him Caidin's book and have a good laugh while you're telling him what TV did to it. (Lee Majors can look back and laugh, so I guess we can too.)

A quick PS - If you're a fan of the old Dr. Who from Britain, check out the new guy on Sci-Fi...He looks like he's having more fun than any of the ones that came before him.

Look forward to him wearing out a library card or two, Chuck. Once you're hooked, it's for life.
